At Edward & Sons, we believe that consumers deserve to be able to make their own choices regarding the suitability of genetically engineered foods in their diets. We are firm believers that certified organic products provide consumers with a high degree of confidence that a product is free of genetically engineered ingredients.
According to the Institute for Responsible Technology, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert foreign genes into the DNA of food crops or animals. Those genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects or animals. This is especially troubling to those who are allergic to certain foods, because genetically engineered food from one food group may contain the genetic material from another, potentially allergy triggering, food group.
At Edward & Sons, we are alarmed over the proliferation of GMOs into the world’s food supply. While we have no certain knowledge that GMOs are harmful to consume, neither do we blindly accept the safety assurances of its supporters. As such, we instruct all of our suppliers to disclose and replace any ingredients that they know to contain genetically engineered materials and we assist them in sourcing acceptable alternatives.
We secure affidavits of genetic integrity on scores of ingredients, and we are proud participants in the Non-GMO Project, which responds to the threat of unlabeled genetically engineered crops overwhelming our food supply.
According to the Organic Trade Association: "To meet the USDA organic regulations, farmers and processors must show they aren't using GMOs, and that they are protecting their products from contact with prohibited substances, such as GMOs, from farm to table.' At Edward & Sons, we urge consumers to opt for organic choices when available, and to encourage producers of conventional groceries to maintain rigorous Non-GMO procedures or participate in the Non-GMO Project.
